How to Make Glass Showers Sparkle!

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

The trick is in the tools, not the product!

Microfiber is the star of the show here, but let's look at the range of techniques leading up to it:

Starting out as a house cleaner, my shower-cleaning experience was limited to my own, apartment-standard tub and shower using a few paper towels and the nearest cleaning product I found to wipe it off. As my company grew, I learned to clean spaces of all shapes and sizes, but I found myself consistently falling short in one area in terms of "wow" factor - making glass shower doors really shine!

The trick, like with most of my methods, is about using the right tools and knowledge - rather than spending time and money on finding that "perfect" chemical.

Tip #1: Grout Brushes

This is for all the nooks and crannies that even a toothbrush can't quite fit into - the thin row of bristles are able to twist and turn inside the door tracks, hinges, corners, and get one with a pipe cleaner attached to even fit sideways into the tiniest crevices.

Tip #2: Suds up!

Using really any cleaner (may I recommend one of our favorites - Public Goods bathroom cleaner) to scrub away at all the walls, doors, glass, crevices, tracks - everything you can find! This step is fun, but honestly not that interesting. The key is to scrub everywhere, then rinse thoroughly with either a movable shower head, or by pouring water from a cup over any soapy surfaces until it rinses clean - but we're not done yet!

Tip #3 - "The Secret" is Microfiber

Using a microfiber rag or towel - somewhere between standard pile and plush - DRY off all shower walls, glass doors, hinges, faucets or other hardware thoroughly. Be prepared to come across a whole lot of spots that you can't believe you missed along the way! Microfiber is excellent, at a scientific, tiny level at really "grabbing" any particles that aren't supposed to be there. This step is drying and touch-up all at once, and this is when the true "shine" and polish comes through!

I often use a second, flat microfiber cloth designed for glass (having a very smooth finish) afterwards as well, to finish up with some ammonia-free glass cleaner, and yes my brand Public Goods has an excellent one. It and Hope's Perfect glass cleaners are much less streaky than Windex (which has ammonia). But don't be fooled, the real polishing effect came from the microfiber, which cleans just as well with plain water! The glass cleaner generally will be the method for cleaning the "outside" of the glass doors, where we weren't able to scrub and rinse with our cleaners.

Make sure to hit all the silver areas - the shiny edges, the tracks, handles - and step back and bask in this accomplishment, and say "wow!"

Microfiber is king

Make sure to get a high-quality microfiber rag, pay attention to care instructions (you don't want to melt it in an extra-hot dryer) and keep it going strong for up to 500 uses!
